Travel Diary: Mycenae Museum
Mycenaean terracotta snakes6th May 2005

The Mycenae Museum displays artifacts found in more recent excavations of the citadel and its surroundings: pottery, stone weights once used to anchor the warp-threads of a hanging loom, stylize clay figures of farmers ploughing behind oxen, female figurines (goddesses, worshippers or dolls?) and unusual terracotta snakes. Both snakes and figurines were found in a small cluster of religious buildings within the citadel of Mycenae.

 What did these serpents mean?

Hi there! Your blog is very good. Are you interested to join trivago? It's an online travelers' community, where users post their reviews about attractions and hotels. You can already use many of your posts from your blog as reviews for trivago, since you're the author. By contributing to trivago you can earn some money, too - not a large amount though, but it's good to have some earning for a hobby that you're already spent time on.

You can join trivago through my invitation link http://www.trivago.co.uk/merkat-83141m and become my friend on trivago.

Nice pictures and good information on Mycenae. The connections of Mycenae to the world of the Ancient Near East are quite striking and worth some exploration. I teach a class on Ancient Near Eastern religions and I include Mycenae in the mix because of the similarities. The connection with snakes and goddesses is clearly attested in both ancient Egypt and Syria. I am very curious how goddess and snakes related in Mycenae.
